Geography Trip - Year 12

Each year the Geography Department takes the Year 12 AS students on a residential field trip. We go to Slapton in Devon and stay at the Field Studies Centre. The students spend their week carrying out primary and secondary field work activities in order to prepare for their Unit 2 exam. We carry out a coastal study along the Start Bay coastline. Here students look at the impacts of coastal erosion and flooding and how such events are managed. In Torquay, we look at the impact of coastal development. This area is known as the ‘English Riviera’ and it has plenty of tourist activities and attractions to keep visitors busy. The city of Plymouth enables us to study urban rebranding. Plymouth is the largest city in the South West and students are able to investigate firsthand the changes that have taken place. A study of a rural rebranded area in Dartington, Devon allows students to make a comparison with an urban area. Students attend classroom sessions to prepare and follow up on field work activities. The students are kept very busy working hard throughout the week and this trip is an excellent opportunity to learn outside of the classroom.
